JESSE CUTLER

Currently working as a freelance Illustrator, Jesse is also in the process of writing his own illustrated novel. His love of reading authors’ works such as Terry Goodkind and Raymond E. Feist has led to his love of Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

I’ve always loved drawing, filling schoolbooks with sketches and cartoons (probably why I did so lousy in class). I began to take my artwork seriously around the end of 2003, when, on a whim, I decided to do an airbrushing course. The course was a hit - it appeared I had a natural ability (hereditary I believe, I come from a long line of artistic folk on both sides of my family).

The only problem I was having with the airbrushing, was the course taught accurate reproduction of existing images (portraits, cars etc), but I wanted to create my own original artwork. Being an avid reader of fantasy and sci-fi, I had all these ideas I wanted get out of my system.

My uncle - a graphic designer by trade, suggested I purchase a graphics tablet. The idea being to use that to rough out my ideas and nail the composition and colours, before airbrushing a final piece. The idea was a bit daunting - I was computer illiterate, and had no idea of the power or freedom of digital artwork. But I finally bit the bullet, saved up some cash and bought my first computer and a cheap 9x12" graphics tablet. That was the end of my Airbrushing career.

After a couple of weeks of playing around with Photoshop I was hooked. The airbrush was packed away, and I set about learning all I could about digital painting. Over the next few years, along with digital painting techniques, I have studied every aspect of traditional painting and drawing. From Anatomy to colour theories and perspective, and; as with every artist, it's an ongoing learning process and I strive to improve constantly. I hope everyone enjoys my work.
